When me and another friend from Germany studied at a Boarding School in the UK, we were very surprised to see that the country did not have a circular bottle deposit and recycling scheme in place, like the one we were used to in our home country. Just in our school, there were vast amounts of non-recycled plastic waste in the form of single use beverage bottles, of which the majority just ended up in landfill. At the same time, we saw a very high demand for bottled water as many international students were not used to drinking tap water in the UK. We saw this as a business opportunity and incorporated the sustainable beverage and snack supplied WAQUA Ltd in 2018. The concept was an easy to use subscription system for water and other beverages, where the bottles would enter a fully circular recycling system, where no plastic waste would end up in landfill. In addition to this, we donated a fixed percentage of our income to the Sea Turtle Rescue Society of Greece, to support the protection of endangered sea turtle species which is partly caused by plastic pollution of the oceans. Our business had an easy-to-use online platform, which I was fully in charge of designing and implementing. Here, students could easily place and manage their orders online, while at the same time generating order lists and statistics for our internal operations. Being the CEO and Co-Founder of the company, the entrepreneurial journey has been a very valuable lesson in all areas, ranging from leadership, negotiating, flexible problem solving, finance and accounting.
